In the beginning months of first grade we concentrate on decoding simple consonant vowel consonant (CVC) words. In my classroom, we’ve covered all but the short vowel u and I’ve introduced over 100 simple CVC words. During center time, when I’m with a smaller group reading, students can practice their new skill independently with ease in this center I’m featuring today. It’s called “Under the Witch’s Hat”. I made it for my students first grade students.
The center comes with six mats with six pictures on each.
It also comes with 36 word cards (on witch hats) containing CVC words with short vowels o, a and i. The student reads the card and finds the picture on the mat. They cover the picture with the word card. Now the picture is “under the witch’s hat”.
It comes with recording sheets, so that the students can practice writing the word that they just read. It comes with answer keys, so that they can check if they’re correct.
Students love this center, because it’s easy. It’s great practice for them and it gives them a lot of confidence.
Sometimes simplicity is best.
Thanks for stopping by and I hope you come back for day number 6. Have fun teaching!
